Borneo bridge collapse: death toll reaches four, many remain missing

Borneo bridge collapse: death toll reaches four, many remain missing

Sunday, November 27, 2011

The death toll from yesterday’s suspension bridge collapse on the Indonesian island of Borneo has risen from three to four, with a six-month-old baby among the dead. Search and rescue teams continue to look for survivors in the Mahakam River.

The initial death toll was raised at first to five, but was revised back down to four. The number of wounded rose from at least seventeen to at least nineteen, but Monsters and Critics offers a figure as high as 39 injured; Indonesia Today yesterday suggested the actual figure was 100 hospitalised. Roughly 40 people remain missing at the scene in East Kalimantan’s Kutai Kartanegara district, where “Kalimantan’s Golden Gate Bridge” linked the towns of Tenggarong and Samarinda.

At least three cars, several motorbikes, and at least one public bus all fell into the Mahakam River. Another car was left overturned and balanced upon wreckage over the water. State-owned builders PT Hutama Karya completed the bridge about a decade ago in the image of California’s Golden Gate Bridge, and it is now reported it was under repair at the time of the failure. New information suggests a cable on the 720-metre structure failed as workers dealt with it; six of the repair crew are among the missing.

National police representative Boy Rafly Amar said “It is believed that some victims are still in the river. There are two buses in the river and efforts are under way to lift them.” He said 39 were rescued with 20 still in hospital. Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih visited survivors in Parikesit Hospital and promised them medical treatment at government expense.

“It happened so fast, only about 30 seconds,” according to National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Nugoroho. National search and rescue head Daryatmo said Monday will see cranes attempt to move debris.

The president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has sent three ministers to the site to investigate the accident, while Bambang Widaryatmo, head of East Kalimantan’s police, promised “parties found to be negligent will be prosecuted”. The government has promised a replacement ferry service. The river is closed to boats as rescue operations continue, and a 22-strong team has been dispatched from the national police, comprising six forensics experts, five disaster victim identification specialists, and eleven investigators. They are there to augment the East Kalimantan Police.

Some people swam ashore after falling, with the aftermath filled with screams. 40-year-old Adam Nur describes breaking free from a car and swimming 300 metres with one arm after his other arm was injured in the fall. Syakrani, 24, says he survived by clinging to empty plastic containers when he fell from the bridge after leaving his truck to investigate a traffic jam. “The authorities should have closed the bridge if it was under repair,” he said.

Renault’s F1 sponsors quit as Grosjean crashes on same corner as Piquet

Renault’s F1 sponsors quit as Grosjean crashes on same corner as Piquet

Friday, September 25, 2009

Two of Renault Formula One’s sponsors have terminated their contracts after Renault’s race-fixing last year. The move comes as Renault racer Romain Grosjean crashed into the same corner as the one Nelson Piquet Jr deliberately hit to ensure victory for his team-mate last year.

Renault’s main sponsor, Dutch bank ING, had already said it would not renew its three-year contract when it expires at the current season’s end, but has now pulled out four races early. It said the recent revelations were “very disappointing”. Spanish insurers Mutua Madrileña echoed this sentiment, saying that moral issues, as well as the fact the manoeuvre was dangerous, reflected badly on sponsors.

The firms have quit because Renault this month admitted to cheating during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. Piquet drove his car into a wall after fellow Renault driver Fernando Alonso had refuelled early. A safety car came out and as various drivers went in to refuel behind it, Alonso was able to move up and secure a win. Alonso, who is Spanish, was also personally sponsored by Mutua Madrileña and this contract remains unchanged.

Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, ordered a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council when the allegations surfaced. At that meeting, Renault were given a two-year suspended sentence that will see them kicked out of the sport if they cheat again in that time-frame. Team boss Flavio Briatore was banned for life and engineer Pat Symonds was banned for five years due to their roles in the incident.

These developments come days after the European Sponsorship Association said that cheating scandals jeopardised funding for teams in major competitions. Renault’s remaining sponsors are French-based international energy firm Total, tyre manufacturer Bridgestone, Russian communications provider Megafon, Pepe Jeans, and Internet educator Universia. Renault have confirmed an intention to remain in F1 despite the recent controversy.

Practice sessions for the 2009 Singapore Grand Prix were held today. “Sorry guys, I lost the car in turn 17,” Grosjean announced over the team’s radio, spinning out on the same corner as Piquet drove into a year ago to trigger the scandal dubbed “Crashgate” by the media. Once more, a safety car appeared while the Renault was removed. A photograph of the car after Grosjean’s accident did not reveal obvious major damage, though it did clearly show that the names of two sponsors have disappeared.

U.S. Economic Growth Next Year Will Exceed The European

By Himfr Ivy

First, the EU faces an uncertain economic recovery, prospects for U.S. growth and high unemployment also is not optimistic. However, half of 2010, the U.S. growth exceeded European. Currently, the U.S. tax cuts next two years has passed, I believe the U.S. will be more advantage.

Finally and most importantly, sovereign debt in 2011 still will be a central issue in the forefront. We believe the European sovereign debt problem, outside the euro zone countries will continue to erode, and ripple effects to the core countries. At the same time, we can not rule out the debt and deficit in 2011 will have a negative impact on the U.S. development.

We expect global GDP growth in major developed countries is lower than average, and below the 2010 level. U.S. fiscal stimulus plan to boost U.S. growth, but the euro zone, Japan and the UK level of growth will decline compared with 2010.

Steady growth in emerging market countries. For inflation, emerging market economies will be proper control of policy makers the economic growth. Major emerging market countries will strengthen the management of inflation, but not over-tighten the implementation of the policy.

After inflation, the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank increased interest rates for the first time, it is estimated the first quarter of 2012, the Bank of England raised interest rates for the first time estimated in the third quarter of 2011. Emerging market central banks will carefully slight increase in official interest rates.

YouTube Preview Image

On the whole, we will use three words to summarize the global economic situation in 2011 and macroeconomic policy: rebalancing, reflation, policy in collaboration (Rebalancing, Reflation and Reconciliation).

Rebalance the world economy in 2011 will accelerate the process. In China, GDP is expected to grow 9%, more than half of the growth will come from consumer spending. Current account surplus will narrow to 3.6% of GDP. In the U.S., net exports will play a major role in the growth of GDP. For most countries, the external imbalance would improve.

In inflation, the U.S. low inflation, deflation in Japan, Europe, the debt crisis, the major mature economies slow economic recovery, indicating that in 2011 the major developed economies, central banks will continue to increase the money supply. Major economies, interest rates are now close to zero, G3 countries still take the over-loose monetary policy, we believe that the future global economy will experience reflation.

While the global re-balancing and reflation in 2011 to promote global economic and market recovery, but taking into account the government’s debt burden in many countries, the future economic downside risk still exists. Therefore, policy coordination between governments is still essential.

First, the trade will grow unexpectedly. Our view is that the recovery of global trade emerging market countries and developed market countries is beneficial. But also the risks to global economic growth increased. Concern that the global trade and the manufacturing industry between China and Germany. China and Germany manufacturing survey, the two economies are well adapted to the global trade cycle.

Secondly, all the liquidity will do. Our view is: the future inflation will remain modest, the cumulative risk with time delay. Concern is that excess liquidity. M1 money supply in nominal GDP, accounts can be used to express the degree of consumer prices were depressed.

Again, the sovereign debt crisis will infect it? Our view is that sovereign debt crisis is far from over, and now is outside the euro zone countries from the national to the center spread. Possible future across the Atlantic, spread to a wider context. Worthy of the market concerned, is the major euro area countries the financial and budgetary system will merge.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

G20 Summit plans to inject US$5tn into economy before 2011

Friday, April 3, 2009

The G20 Summit held in London, England concluded Thursday with an injection into the economy of US$5 trillion by the end of 2010.

Global trade would be supported by $250 billion (169.5 billion pounds). “We are going to act decisively to kickstart international trade. We will ensure availability of at least $250 billion over the next two years,” said Gordon Brown Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The International Monetary Fund IMF will have access to $750bn in resources of which $250bn will support special drawing rights.

Developing countries received $100bn which will be dispensed via Multilateral development banks. Towards this end, the IMF will sell off gold reserves.

China will support the IMF fund by $40bn, the European Union by $100bn, and Japan by $100bn.

There will be increased regulation on banking and credit ratings agencies. There was a commitment to clamp down on hedge funds, tax havens and toxic assets. To restore consumer confidence in the financial sector, a new Financial Stability Board will be initiated internationally. There would be new policies implemented to control pay and bonuses paid to the heads of banks and corporations.

The G20 leaders were adverse to protectionism and rallied to support international trade and investment.

The Leaders’ statement said, “We reaffirm the commitment made in Washington: to refrain from raising new barriers to investment or to trade in goods and services, imposing new export restrictions, or implementing World Trade Organization (WTO) inconsistent measures to stimulate exports.”

Eoin O’Malley, senior adviser on international trade at BusinessEurope, said “The measure also needs to be part of wider package to avoid protectionism and conclude the Doha round which will stimulate trade growth. The key point now is to move forward with Doha. The key now is implementation. G20 governments must act quickly to provide this finance to companies that need it urgently.”

Rare megamouth shark found dead in Pio Duran, Philippines

Saturday, January 31, 2015

A megamouth shark was found dead in the Philippines on Wednesday. There have been only fifteen confirmed sightings in the nation and around 60 worldwide.

The fifteen-foot male was found after reportedly becoming entangled with a fishing net near the Barangay Marigondon neighborhood of Pio Duran, Albay province. Its body was encased with ice pending a necropsy. The cause of death was not immediately clear.

Locals have nicknamed the dead shark ‘toothless’, a How to Train Your Dragon movie reference. In truth megamouths can have up to fifty rows of teeth.

Megamouths reach up to eighteen feet. Their name refers to its large head and mouth, used to filter plankton and other small food from the ocean. Occasionally the prey of other sharks and whales, megamouths are thought to live in the Pacific around Taiwan, the Philippines, and Japan based on previous sightings. Its true range and population size are however unknown. The first such shark identified was accidentally discovered by the US Navy off the coast of Hawaii when it became stuck in a ship’s anchor. Researchers theorise a white strip on the shark’s head illuminates to attract prey.

British snooker player Alex Higgins found dead at age 61

British snooker player Alex Higgins found dead at age 61

Monday, July 26, 2010

Snooker player Alex Higgins, nicknamed “Hurricane”, was found dead in his apartment in Donegall Road, Belfast, Northern Ireland on Saturday. He was aged 61 and had been suffering from throat cancer since 1997.

Born in Belfast on March 18, 1949, Higgins became the champion of the World Snooker Championship at the age of 23 in 1972. He reached the same achievement again in 1982. Higgins’ final title victory was in the Irish Professional Championship in 1989.

During 1986, he received a fine and was banned from five tournaments after headbutting a director of a tournament. He was also banned from playing for one year in 1990 after threatening to have Dennis Taylor, another snooker player, shot.

Recently, Higgins lost all his teeth as the result of having treatment for his cancer. In May 2010, a charity dinner took place in Manchester, England that raised approximately £20,000 (US$30,997, €23,859, A$34,363, C$31,961) so as to allow surgery for new teeth for him to occur. However, Higgins was considered to be too unhealthy to have the surgery in Marbella, Spain.

Dennis Taylor, now a snooker commentator at the BBC, stated that “[t]here was just something about the way he played the game — there was a little bit of [John] McEnroe in there. I don’t think you’ll ever see a player in the game of snooker like the great Alex Higgins.”

Philip Studd, another commentator of snooker for the BBC, has described the late snooker player as being “snooker’s original troubled genius” and that Higgins was “[c]harismatic, flash, fast, unpredictable, combustible — you just couldn’t take your eyes off the ‘Hurricane’.” Studd continued to explain that “[w]hile he could never match the consistency of Steve Davis or Stephen Hendry, Higgins on his day was the greatest of them all. He touched the heights in 1982 when he won his second world title. He pipped Jimmy White to the final thanks to a break still widely regarded as the finest ever made. His tears of triumph after beating Ray Reardon — wife and baby in arms — remains one of snooker’s most iconic moments. Without Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins snooker would never have become one of the most popular television sports in the 1980s and beyond.”
